west_winds_cutlassWith The Ashes upon us, we thought it timely to bring a fantastic Australian gin to your attention.

I came across The West Winds about 3 years ago when a friend bought me a bottle after a visit to his home land, Australia. I was delighted and frustrated in equal measures as I really liked it but couldn’t get it in the UK. Thankfully that’s changed and now we can all get West Winds – The Cutlass here in the UK.

This is a punchy gin bottled at 50% ABV, and The West Winds uses indigenous botanicals such as cinnamon myrtle, lemon myrtle and Australian bush tomato along with traditional botanicals of locally grown juniper and coriander seed.

The nose is fresh and vibrant. There is a large coriander hit but also a low fruity note in the background. All round fruity and crisp with floral undertones.

Tasted neat it’s punchy and fresh. It leads with subtle sweet notes which build as you sip. There is lovely hedgerow fruitiness which we assume comes from the bush tomato and the middle is dry and lightly bitter which builds to a peppery finish which activates the roof of the mouth with a lovely tingle. It has a clean, sharp linger which is very pleasant indeed.

With tonic, this gin really comes swashbuckling to life. The sweet fruitiness opens out whilst the coriander still holds its own and remains strong on the nose (a big cheer for the copa glass!) There is a solid dry spine throughout and the top of the mouth seems to become activated by a pepper tingle which enhances the mouth feel. This gin is full and rounded, having sweet and slightly savoury, hedgerow notes together is a fantastic gin drinking experience. It makes a smashing gin and tonic and we are going to be controversial and garnish with Basil.

So it would seem that not only are Australia teaching us how to play cricket at the moment (England having just been spanked at Lords 🙁 ) they are also showing us something new in gin. This is a bold refreshing all-rounder. I’m sure The West Winds Cutlass will have as good an innings as Australia is currently having!
